Veeam VDRO (v5)

What is VDRO?
"Veeam Disaster Recovery Orchestrator (VDRO) extends the functionality of Veeam Availability Suite to orchestrate (automate) common disaster recovery (DR) processes in VMware vSphere environments, support one-click recovery for critical applications or even an entire site, and provide rich features for documentation, testing and execution."

  • "One-click simplicity to recover virtually any workload"

Five factors causing cyber insurance rates to increase...

  1. Insufficient cybersecurity hygiene.

  2. Increased impact and frequency of Ransomware.

  3. Increase in recovery-related costs.

  4. Lack of formal IRPs ("Incident Response Plans").

  5. Impact on business interruptions.

Six questions to ask yourself about Disaster Recovery...

  1. Have you documented your IT infrastructure? (Yes/No)

  2. Do you have the knowledge required to restore your IT infrastructure? (Yes/No)

  3. Do your colleagues have the knowledge to restore your IT infrastructure? (Yes/No)

  4. Are you certain to be available when disaster happens (Disasters rarely strike at a convenient time)? (Yes/No)

  5. Have you tested the restore plan based on your documentation? (Yes/No)

  6. When was the last time you tested the recovery? (Insert date here)

Important DRP ("Disaster Recovery Plan") components...

  • Well defined and documented Recovery Time Objectives (RTOs) and Recovery Point Objectives (RPOs). What are your organizational expectations? It's important to make sure that IT recovers the highest priority applications first (see SLAs).

  • Complete inventory of hardware and software assets (consider using Veeam One). IT can’t afford to spend hours looking for documentation.

  • Identified recovery roles and responsibilities.

  • Defined Disaster Recovery sites and locations,

  • Documented response procedures. Recovery order is critical. What are the application interdependencies?

  • Identification of sensitive data.

  • Well defined and executable "Crisis Communication Plan" (Details at

  • Continuous practice tests to ensure your plan is effective (SureBackup).

  • Veeam Disaster Recovery Orchestrator Recovery Locations

IMPORTANT NOTE: Pre-planning typically requires a luxury that most organizations don’t have: A set of IT personnel dedicated to creating, validating and continuously updating the plan.

Key capabilities of VDRO...

  • Reliable Recovery. Verify that common enterprise applications are functioning.

  • Automated Testing. Perform zero-impact DR tests scheduled or on demand.

  • Dynamic Documentation (fully customizable in MS Word format, including dynamic variables).

"What processes do you have in place for mass recovery?"

"What is your plan if your environment is hit by a ransomware attack?"

"How often do you update your recovery plan documentation?"

"How much time does recovery documentation and testing require from your team?"

"Have you been able to validate RTO/RPO achievement in a recovery scenario?"

"Does this mean your team spends time manually creating and updating DR documentation?"

"When changes happen in production IT, what does it take to update your recovery plan today?"

"What is the impact to your business if you are unable to recover in a disaster?"

Storage orchestration plans for HPE Primera, 3PAR and Alletra 9000 storage systems...

Directly orchestrate failover from Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) storage systems, leveraging HPE native snapshot replication, to reduce the complexity of the recovery process.

HPE Storage customers can now leverage the power of dynamically generated documentation, DataLabs based testing and the flexibility of the HTML5-based plan creation wizard to simplify recovery.

What is Veeam DR pack? (Click Here)

Veeam Disaster Recovery Orchestrator is procured in two ways:

  1. Via DR Pack, which is a packaging option where Veeam Disaster Recovery Orchestrator can be added on top of a new or previous purchase of either Veeam Availability Suite or Veeam Backup & Replication to ensure business continuity for all your VMs (not just the most-critical ones)! Total number of purchased DR Pack licenses must match the total number of VMware vSphere VMs licensed in Veeam Availability Suite or Veeam Backup & Replication.

  2. Standalone: you can also purchase Veeam Disaster Recovery Orchestrator as a standalone offering for only your most-critical VMs. These licenses are available in one-to-five-year annual subscriptions.

All licenses are sold via subscription on a per-VM basis in bundles of 10. Veeam Disaster Recovery Orchestrator licenses are non-transferable to other Veeam products, and generic Veeam Universal Licenses cannot be applied to Veeam Disaster Recovery Orchestrator. All purchases include 24x7 Production Support.

VAO Roles

Secure role-based access: Control secure access for app owners and operations teams.

  • AdministratorCan perform all configuration actions, can manage user roles, and can also act as a Plan Author and Plan Operator for any orchestration plan.

  • Plan AuthorCan create, edit and test orchestration plans, and can also generate VAO reports and view dashboards.

  • Plan OperatorCan schedule, run and test orchestration plans, and can also generate VAO reports and view dashboards.

"A Readiness Check is one of the four types of reports that Orchestrator can automatically generate for you, and even e-mail to key stakeholders automatically. The Readiness Check takes a look at things like your RPO to make sure you are always in compliance, and also ensures your target disaster recovery resources are ready for failover. Readiness Checks take just a few moments to run. Besides having them automatically e-mailed, you can also view the results right in the Orchestrator web interface, or download them."
